A Brief Summary of This Position:

This individual contributor is accountable for training, testing, and certifying persons to weld in all groups at Tulsa Operations.  This role develops weld procedures and solves welding related problems in the plant and in the field, if required.  The position is responsible for performing experimental work and tests involving welding projects and metalizing.  The position works closely with employees and supervisors to identify training needs and support new and existing employees in developing the necessary skill-sets to be successful in their assigned positions.  This position is a night shift operation and the normal work days are Monday through Friday, special projects could changes these days. 

Essential Functions:

·         This position reports to the site Quality Manager and has no direct reports

·         Incumbent evaluates potential welding candidates and maintains records associated with evaluations

·         Must be able to train on topics including, but not limited to manipulative skills to weld, knowledge and understanding of the process and equipment, safe welding, metal cutting practices, grinding, and blue print reading with welding symbols

·         Provide training on Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), plasma, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), brazing, and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

·         Incumbent provides one-on-one coaching and training support to new and existing welding staff

·         Maintains and updates welding certifications for appropriate departments

·         Must be able to recognize safety hazards and provide a safe working environment to trainees

·         Assist with continuous improvement and welding operations

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

·         Knowledge of and experience with the following welding processes: Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Core Arc Welding (FCAW), plasma, Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), brazing, and Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)

·         Knowledge of flame cutting, plasma cutting and metalizing

·         Ability to teach and train new employees the necessary skills to become a welder including: manipulative skills to weld, knowledge and understanding of the process and equipment, safe welding, metal cutting practices, grinding and blue print reading with welding symbols

·         Welding personnel qualification and associated recordkeeping

·         Verification of material and components to specifications (before welding)

·         Control of welding procedure specifications and related documentation

·         Assist in ensuring fabrication and repairs are in accordance with AWS D1.1 section 5

·         Welding power supply calibration

·         Flux & rod oven calibration

·         Shielding gas conformance to specification

·         Shielding gas mixer calibration (if applicable)

·         Verification of weldments to specification (after welding)

·         Verification of welding conformance (in-process)

·         Demonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors and conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures

·         High School Diploma/GED and 5+ years of work/educational experience or Associates Degree with 2+ years’ experience or Bachelor’s Degree

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications:

·         Associates Degree in Welding Technology

·         Experience with The American Welding Society Codes D1.1 and D1.5

·         Knowledge of Valmont’s quality procedures, standards, and practices

·         Certified Welding Inspector accreditation (CWI) from The American Welding Society (AWS)

Working Environment and Physical Efforts:

Work is typically performed in an industrial shop setting.  The incumbent is regularly required to stand for extended periods of time, as well as talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings.    Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time.  No travel requirements for this position.  The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the shop.  The employee is frequently required to move about the shop and site.  Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards when performing manual tasks such as welding. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, with most frequent lift up to 20 pounds, in working with materials and equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.   Working conditions may include abnormal temperatures including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice.  Employee may also be exposed to jarring and bouncing, high noise areas, and other job related hazards.  Employees are required to wear all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for the position.
